Our Mission

My Dyslexia Classroom is a passion project created to bridge the gap between psychoeducational reports, IEPs, and the classroom. Research has shown a disconnect between best practice and the implementation of accommodation and support in today’s classrooms. Personal observation and experience have confirmed this.

Support

What is dyslexia? In the simplest terms dyslexia is a language processing disorder. Dyslexic thinkers have many intellectual gifts, on the flip side their brain has trouble processing symbols (letters, numbers etc).

What does this mean? Children with dyslexia can not show their knowledge through literacy.

What does this look like in the classroom? Just like some children require glasses to see the board, hearing aids to hear the teacher or a wheelchair to move about; children with dyslexia require specific supports and accommodations to make it possible for them to show their knowledge.

Is dyslexia an intellectual gift? Many in the dyslexic community that believe dyslexia is a gift. People with dyslexia are overrepresented in professions that require analytical thinking, ingenuity and profound creativity. Researchers are only starting to study this important question, and the findings are supporting this viewpoint.
